MLK Jr. Day News Blast

Dear Families,
What an exciting, motivating and engaging three weeks we have had in Endeavor 4th Grade!  I hope your child has come home and shared with you all that we are learning about!  We have begun learning about Vermont History, we've been relating fractions to decimals, we finished Tuck Everlasting, have been writing opinion essays and even managed to learn a little about MLK Jr.  We created a beautiful display of drawings and words about MLK JR.  I hope your child shared their work with you!

We hope the Vermont Map Project has given you something to talk about at home and given you the opportunity to watch your child learn and create!  As tempting as it is, please allow your children to create this map on their own.  I have been so impressed with their organizational skills in managing this 2 week long project.  I am looking forward to seeing the finished products on FRIDAY, January 223rd!  During class we completed a few scavenger hunts to get our toes wet int he topic of Vermont History.  We explored the http://vermonthistory.org/  website as well as a Vermont Attractions Road Map.  This week we will begin reading both Historical Fiction and Informational Texts about Vermont.  We will be partner reading and leaving our tracks as we discover information about the culture, food, work, and schooling of early Vermonters.

During Number Corner we have been discovering new shapes daily and finding their areas.  We unpacked the word similar and learned that it means the same just different sizes.  We are seeing a pattern in the growth of the sizes of these shapes across the month.  We have also been solving problems involving multiplication and division.  We have been creating number lines with fractions, this has been challenging and I see us focusing on this as much as we can.  Next week we will also begin focused practice of multi-digit addition and subtraction.  We see that some of us need a boost in this area.

We had a really fun fieldtrip to the Flynn last week.  Doktor Kaboom helped us have a growth mindset when it comes to science and math!  We can do it!
I hope that you all have read the newsletter articles about our new report cards.  Report cards will be sent home on Friday.  If you have any questions or concerns, please email me or call me.  Every single child is working so hard to do the best that they can and they are all growing in their skills across subjects!
