I am reading "The Aurora County All-Stars" by Deborah Wiles. In this book the author includes clips of the Aurora County Newspaper. These clips sometimes summarize some of what you've already read, or tell you little bits of information you will need later to understand the story. I think this is important because these short clips help you understand the story by giving you information that will be helpful later.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes sport stories, or who like Deborah Wile's other books: Love Ruby Lavender or, Each Little Bird That Sings.

  2. Charlotte, I love that you are reading this book that has such sophisticated text structures. I think that it is so cool that it weaves fiction with bits of nonfiction writing! As a reader, I am impressed with your ability to know the author has used the newspaper clips to remind you of the events that have already occurred and is also giving you some hints about what might happen next! I am wondering two things! I wonder what kind of person is the main character and how do you know this about him or her? Also, do the newspaper clips give you a different point of view of the story that is unfolding in this book? I would love to hear from you!

    1. Vasanthi-
The main character in the story is named House. He loves baseball. House plays on a very small team called the Aurora County All-Stars. Each year they have their only game on July 4th. This year to celebrate the county’s anniversary there will be a pageant. There is one problem: the pageant is on July 4th, the same day as the baseball game! All of the mothers of the players on the team have signed up their boys for the pageant, but they just want to play ball!
There is a lot of arguing about which one to do over the other, but House doesn’t listen to the arguing and thinks of a compromise. His idea is to have some girls from the pageant sing the national anthem, and some dance during half-time. At first, the arguing remains and people disagree, but finally they agree to work it out. I think this situation makes House unique, because he thought outside the box and didn’t care what people thought of him.
I think that the newspaper clips give me a different perspective of the story. I think this because in the real story they have events with dialogue, details, and it is worded in present tense. The newspaper, on the other hand, doesn’t include dialogue, isn’t very detailed, and is worded in past tense.

  3. HI Charlotte,
I love the way that you have defined House! I can tell that the details in the writing have really helped you develop a "sketch" of who he is! You know that he is unique, not afraid to take a risk, can think outside the box and of course loves baseball! Do you feel like you know any of the other characters as well as you know House? I like the way the author switched between past and present tense and styles of writing. I love books that are told by different characters. I like hearing about things from different perspectives. What books are you reading now?

I am reading A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park. Have you read any books by her? I am really enjoying this book. It is set in Korea, in the past. The main character is an orphan who lives with an old wise man and has just gotten a job working for a potter. I am at a major event in the book and I am curious about what is going to happen and how the characters are going to be affected.
You should read this book! Keep in touch! My family is headed to Maine next week! I can't wait!

  4. Hi Vasanthi!
I hope you had fun in Maine! A character I know as well as I know House? That is a hard question to answer, but the character best described like House would be Brain from Hatchet. Hatchet is by Gary Paulsen, and has amazing description. Have you read this book? After I read The Aurora County All-Stars I read The Kite Fighters by Linda Sue Park. I have read Project Mulberry by Linda Sue Park, but not A Single Shard. I then read May B by Caroline Starr Rose. This book is a DCF book, and is written in poetry form. I really enjoyed this poetry form because it was so simple, but used many powerful words to help you understand the story. Now I am finishing The Mighty Miss Malone by Christopher Paul Curtis. He wrote Bud, Not Buddy and The Watson's Go To Birmingham. Have you read any of these? The Mighty Miss Malone has been a great book.

  5. Dear Charlotte,
SO great to hear from you again. FIrst of all I am so impressed by how much reading you have done this summer! You have real stamina for reading! I love that you have read different types of books, too! Thanks for the list of other Linda Sue Park books. I have not read any books by Christopher Paul Curtis, I've heard his books are great! It has been a long time since I have read Hatchet. I can't wait to be in our classroom reading together. I am learning a lot this week in a class on blogging. We will be using kidblog this year, and each of you will have your own blog! I have been on the youngwritersproject website, too. Do you think your mom will want to lead this up again? I will be in school all next week form 10 until 2, stop by:)

  6. Hi Vasanthi!
I am reading Hurt Go Happy by Ginny Rorby. This book is about Joey Willis, who has been deaf since she was six. Her mother doesn't want Joey to learn sign language, but Joey doesn't understand why. One day, Joey meets Charlie who brings Joey to his house and Joey is surprised when she finds a baby chimpanzee living in his house! She and Sukari (The chimps name) become best friends. The most interesting thing is that Sukari can sign. Slowly Joey starts to learn sign language, but her mom stays in her way. This book is really great so far. I find it amazing to go into the world of someone with a disability, because I can see how they see the world. That's why I love reading Wonder, because I can go in Auggie's shoes and see how he sees the world.

  7. Hi Charlotte,
I totally agree about going into the world of someone with a disability. I know that Auggie in Wonder has stayed with me and I think about how all he really wanted was some friends and to be accepted by his peers. Now that I am reading Out of my Mind, I am feeling so badly for Melody and wanting her to have the ability to speak! I wonder how both authors did their research to write these books. I wonder if they have people in their lives with these types of disabilities. They are amazing writers and so kind to tackle this type of writing and to teach readers like us how to respect all children in our classrooms!
    See you MOnday!
